About us…
We are a small family run hatchery. 2/3 of us either work or go to school full. We only keep a few breeds because we desire to have a quality breed chicken and to keep bloodlines of rare birds from becoming extinct. Commercial hatcheries might have 1000 of one breed while we have 10-20 of each breed.
All of our breeding stock is local:
Nothing we breed leaves our property unless we sell it. In past years, we have been wiped out twice from diseases from buying breeders and eggs from other places. We had to cull everything that we own and start over. Therefore, we do not buy hatching eggs or chickens from other farms, online (except occasionally recognized licensed hatcheries), or at local markets. Since doing that, we have never had another disease.
We do our best to plan ahead and have plenty of birds each year for breeding. We have to feed our birds minimal feed in the summer due to free ranging. In the winter months, our feed price more than doubles due to the lack of bugs, grass, etc.. We usually base how many breeder birds we keep at the end of summer on what is selling and how expensive eggs are in the stores. If eggs are cheap at the stores, we sell very few chickens compared to when eggs are expensive.
We keep common breeds:
99.9% of people who contact us want a well -known laying hen for eggs only. Very few want a rooster. Even fewer want a rare breed that might lay 150 eggs per year. Because of this, we do keep a few common breeds of chickens. If we didn’t, we would go bankrupt because we would rarely sell anything.
